The Executive Board of the International Olympic Committee (IOC)
selected Sochi as one of the Candidate Cities for the Winter Olympic
Games in 2014. The idea of this project's realization is a large-scale
bluff. It will cause a huge damage to nature and biodiversity.

News from Environmental Watch On North Caucasus says: "Construction of a
motor road leading to Pslukh Cordon, located in the Caucasus Reserve
started, in December 2006 in connection with Sochi's bid for the 2014
Winter Olympics being one of the three candidate cities for future
Winter Olympics." The road construction poses a serious threat to the
highest value natural areas of the Western Caucasus and conflicts with
the environmental legislation as the road should cross the territory of
Sochi National Park and Sochi Zakaznik (wildlife refuge) to end within
the territory of the Caucasus Reserve. Therefore, the road will
stretch along the boundaries of the "Western Caucasus" World Heritage
Site and will enter its territory. Russian legislation prohibits
construction of such motor roads in within bounds of such protected
areas. But the Russian Government is ready to invest a fabulous sum of
money in the development of Sochi - more than 10 billion euro!

The application committee Sochi 2014 asked the Russian Federation
Government to make the appropriate bodies to prevent citizen protests.
This violates the constitutional right to peaceful demonstrations.
Nevertheless, the deputy head of the Russian Government commissioned the
Russian intelligence services (including the FSS - Federal Security
Service and the Ministry of Internal Affairs) to consider the request.
In his turn, the head of the Russian Olympic committee Mr. Tyagachev
said during his visit to Krasnodar: "If [the environmentalists] brandish
the Constitution to declare that we cannot cut fir trees and pine trees,
we'd rather change the Constitution". Therefore, the European Greens
call upon the International Olympic Committee to reject Russia's
application to conduct the Winter Olympic Games-2014 in Sochi.

actions to create awareness about this issue. A world-wide protest from
environmental organizations and other NGOs in requested. Join this
network and support the public campaign. Please forward back to the
campaign any actions/events or written material generated in support, so
it can be spread through media in Russia.
